Netcraft has the following vacancies; applications from outside the UK are welcome if supported by citizenship of an EU country or a current work permit for the UK and an excellent command of the English language.

Software Development roles

Netcraft is very keen to receive applications from high performing Computer Science students wishing to work at Netcraft after graduation, or for an industrial year or summer vacation. Aims are to recruit approximately 10-12 graduates or industrial year students this year, and additionally have opportunities for students to work with us through the summer vacation.

Culture

The distinguishing factor that makes Netcraft stand apart from other graduate opportunities is the closely-knit culture of the company, and as such new recruits can become involved in all aspects of the business and very quickly become useful members of the team.

Training

As a new recruit joining Netcraft you would have the opportunity to gain useful experience in Internet security, exploration and development. As well as rapidly developing your technical skills you will become involved in many other aspects of the business. These will range from analysing data and fixing bugs to communicating with clients and researching new business opportunities.

New recruits will gain valuable skills and experience by taking part in the following activities:

  • Security testing. You will assume the role of an external attacker and endeavour to find any vulnerabilities in a client’s system that would allow for unauthorised access, data loss or system compromise. At the end of each security test you will produce a report that is sent to the client and explains both the vulnerabilities and the steps that should be taken to correct them.
  • PhishFeed. Netcraft provides a feed that is used by the three major browsers to block phishing and other fraudulent websites. You will become involved with the classification of phishing sites, and develop rules to help classify these sites automatically.
  • Takedown. Banks and other organisations protect their clients by subscribing to Netcraft’s “countermeasures” service. You will carry out takedowns against phishing sites by contacting hosting companies, upstream bandwidth providers and local law enforcement. You will work to improve this process by developing automation where it is appropriate.
  • Internet Research. You will be involved in the development of Netcraft’s various Internet surveys. These surveys explore the Internet gathering information on the market share of web servers, operating systems, hosting providers, ISPs, encrypted transactions, electronic commerce, scripting languages and content technologies on the internet.
