Mansur Aliyu Masama MSc Cyber Security, 2019
When I did my research into all the universities that offered a degree in MSc Cyber Security, I was particularly impressed by the University of Southampton because the modules brought together many different aspects of contemporary information technology ranging from the web, networks and cyber physical systems to legal aspects of the subject and even criminology.
The facilities provided at the Zepler and Mountbatten labs are awesome. ISolutions and library support services are very helpful and I can even get access to support from my hall of residence. Overall, I can get everything I need to succeed in my course.
What have been the highlights of your time at Southampton?
When I arrived I was surprised to see I would be spending almost 60 per cent of my time in the computer labs. It was a bit tough to start with but I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to do so much practical work.
As the University is one of the best in the UK for computing, it’s not been easy. I’ve had to focus hard on my studies, especially in the first semester. But throughout my time here, I believed I could do it and that has helped me to excel.
During my degree, I’ve met students from many different nationalities, ages and backgrounds. I would say the city is a safe place and the weather isn’t too bad although I must admit it’s much better back home in Nigeria.
Have you developed the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a career in cyber security?
Basically, I’ve developed my problem-solving skills and don’t fear encountering new and complex problem in computing. My writing and reading skills have also improved.
I’ve also benefited from testing out my hacking skills to understand cybersecurity issues.
