As an undergraduate from the UK or a European Union country, you can apply for a student loan to help pay for tuition fees and you may also be eligible for a loan for living costs.
Student Loan for Fees
- Will cover all tuition fees for every year of study
- Only repayable once you are earning over £21,000 per year
- The amount you receive does not depend on your financial circumstances
- Whatever your tuition fee, your monthly repayment will be the same - only the number of payments will vary
Student Loan for Maintenance
- Available for each year of study to help with living costs such as food, accommodation and travel
- The amount you can borrow depends on your circumstances
- Only repayable once you are earning over £21,000 per year; linked to your tuition fee loan so you only make one monthly payment.
- Student loans are issued by Student Finance England on behalf of the government – they are not commercial loans. Interest is charged on a student loan from the date you receive it to the date you pay it off.
Additional support
Depending on your personal circumstances (eg your household income), you may also be eligible for:
- A non-repayable Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant
- One of our bursaries or scholarships
- Additional help is also available if you have:◦a disability or specific learning difficulty
- dependent children or adults
- If you find yourself in financial hardship during your time at university, you may be able to obtain extra financial support for your course from the Access to Learning Fund.
