Studying for a PhD in Germanium Lasers

Future technology
“I first came to Southampton from my job as an electrical control engineer to complete my MSc in Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology and stayed on when I got a scholarship for my PhD in Germanium Lasers with the Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology research group. As a researcher I felt I could contribute to future technology innovations.
"I am really enjoying fabricating nanoscale devices in the cleanrooms and I have been networking with researchers from well-known facilities such as the University of Tokyo. I have also gained great experience in experimental work using the photonics laboratories and cleanrooms.
Innovative research
“My PhD research focuses on engineering Germanium to emit light efficiently that could permit the integration of electronics and photonics on the same chip. This new technology would take microchips to another level of speed and performance.
“In the long-term I would like to make technology more green and available for everyone.”
