Associate Professor, School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS)

Member of the Zepler Institute for Photonics and Nanoelectronics.

Since September 2000 Tracy Melvin has been at the University of Southampton and has research interests in the areas of optical microdevices for bioanalysis. The focus of her research is to create technologies to provide the potential to answer bioscience questions, that are difficult or cannot be answered in any other way. This is achieved by developing novel methodology and devices, some of which was originally conceived for optical telecommunications applications. Her research crosses the medical science – microfluidics -optical device interface and includes bionanotechnology methods.

Tracy Melvin obtained her PhD from University College London. After post-docs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA and the Max Planck Institut fur Strahlenchemie, Germany, she worked in the MRC Radiation and Genome Stability Unit on direct ionisation and enzymatic detection of DNA damage. After researching in the area of charge-migration in DNA, she became interested in the interface of microsystems and microelectronics with biochemistry and took up a research post in the CNRS working at the Centre de Biophysique Moleculaire and the Laboratoire de Physique et Metrologie des Oscillateurs, France.

Research

Research interests

Microdevices for bioanalysis (biochemistry and cell biology applications), optical/microfluidic devices for bioanalytical applications (including optical sorting, sensitive detection), biophotonics, bionanotechnology (and the application of the novel physical properties of nanomaterials for biosensing, micro/nanofabrication) and microfluidics.

Teaching

Medical Electrical and Electronic Technologies (ELEC6247) (4th yr, MSc. electronics, electrical and electromechanical fields)  As a master's level module, this has been designed to include a combination of taught (lectures and tutorials) and self-study to build on each individual's engineering expertise.  The module is designed to provide the foundational knowledge for advancement of expertise into the clinical/biomedical academic and industrial sectors where your electrical/electromechanical/electronics expertise is the main technology driver.

Group Design Project (ELEC6200) (4th yr electronics, electrical, electromechanical, computer science and information technology fields) This module provides an introduction to intensive group project work in collaboration with an industrial or academic customer. Students work in groups of four or five on a challenging project iwhich will be typically based on an idea from an industrial partner, or from a research project looking to transfer technology to industry or build a demonstrator/proof of concept.  The aim of the group design project is to encourage both innovation and engagement with the broader engineering context (financial, economic, social, environmental). The use of ‘real world’ engineering problems requires students to actively engage with their customers to determine the scope and requirements of their project, in order to provide a realistic simulation of the sort of challenges that they are likely to face as engineering graduates.

Apple engineer Aniket Singh

Apple engineer Aniket Singh is offering Indian students the chance to follow in his footsteps in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) through a new international internship program at the University of Southampton.

The chip design expert in Cupertino, California, has invested in a program that will fund three-month internships in ECS for promising students from Indian universities.

Aniket interned with ECS during his own studies at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras, India, and has authored a series of books on domestic and international study themed ‘Intern Abroad This Summer’.

Students selected in the new program will join ECS in summer 2019 and gain first-hand experience of the School’s high quality academic research.

During his own internship Aniket worked with Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, a renowned expert in computer engineering who is now Dean of Southampton’s Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

“I would like to share my sincerest thanks for the establishment of the Aniket Singh Intern Abroad Program,â€? Bashir says. “This opportunity will nurture talent, support greater cross-cultural awareness and help to facilitate and encourage the potential of talented Indian students.â€?

The new ECS internships expand Aniket’s international program, which already links Indian students in engineering, management, sciences and humanities subjects with top colleges in England, India, Singapore and Switzerland.

Aniket holds a BTech degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering from the IIT and a Master’s degree in Wireless Systems from the Politechnico di Torino in Italy. He interned at the University of Southampton and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, during his studies.

He recounts the transformative effect of these international placements in Intern Abroad This Summer, which was published in 2017.

A high-performing student and skilled graduate from the School of Electronics and Computer Science have been named UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) Scholar of the Year and Young Engineer of the Year at the prestigious TechWorks Awards.

University of Southampton staff, students and alumni were finalists in five categories in yesterday’s ceremony hosted by the UK Industry Association for Deep Tech, including a Research Collaboration of the Year nomination for the Arm-ECS Research Centre and a shortlisting as University Research Group of the Year for the Electronic Materials and Devices Group.

Electronic Engineering graduate Emma Curati-Alasonatti, now at Arm, scooped the Young Engineer of the Year prize in the awards at London’s Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, nominated alongside former peer Ashley Robinson.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Ricki Tura was presented the UKESF Scholar of the Year award and becomes the fifth Southampton student to win the national honour in the past eight years. The MEng student, who has served as president of the Electronics and Computer Science Society, has benefited from a fruitful partnership with System on Chips company UltraSoC.

“It feels great to be recognised not only for my achievements in academia and industry, but also for my contributions in promoting electronics in the community,â€? Ricki said. “My experience as a UKESF scholar has been fantastic and I recommend the scheme to anyone considering a career in the electronics industry.â€?

UKESF scholarships are available to electronics undergraduates at selected universities and include an annual bursary, paid summer work placements and mentorship from a sponsoring company.

Ricki hopes to launch an international career when he graduates in 2020, with ambitions to work in global technology hubs like California’s Silicon Valley or Shenzhen in China.

“Studying Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Southampton has been invaluable,â€? he explains. “The range and depth of content in addition to the School's leading facilities has made it easy to thrive. I've found the projects the most enjoyable, which ranged from group design tasks to the Third Year individual project, where I spent a year working on swarm robotics as part of my dissertation.â€?

Ricki has been an integral part of the 2,000 strong ECS Society during his studies and was elected president in April 2017. Under his direction the society observed a two-fold increase in participation at industry partner events and held its first ever hackathon in collaboration with J. P. Morgan and talent.io.
