Associate Professor in Computer Science, Turing Fellow

My research interests are focussed on natural language processing / computational linguistics focussing on information extraction and human-in-the-loop NLP. He has been a PI and CoI on various UKRI projects, EU H2020, Innovate UK, Home Office and DSTL projects. Many of these projects are cross-disciplinary in nature, featuring consortia with a mixture of academic and commercial partners experienced in a range of domains and disciplines. His PhD looked into recommender systems and ontologies, working under supervisors Prof Dave de Roure and Prof Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and was completed in Oct 2002.

Natural Language Processing

My research interest lies in the natural language processing area of information extraction and human-in-the-loop NLP, developing novel algorithms to discover and exploit patterns in free text and metadata to extract actionable human intelligence and machine-readable knowledge. In a juxtaposition to big data approaches, my research has focussed on developing novel solutions to problems where training sets are small, sparse or fragmented in nature. This is very common in areas such as social media posts during breaking news events, emerging topics within online community forums, criminal marketplaces exhibiting deliberate obfuscation, and historical datasets where information can be inaccurately recorded, corrupted or lost over time. I am interested in investigating socio-technical NLP approaches promoting explainable and trustworthy AI, human-in-the-loop approaches and information extraction based on techniques such as few/zero-shot learning, graph-based models, sentence embeddings, domain adaption and argument mining.

FloraGuard project : an UK ESRC funded project. FloraGuard will examine and map from a multidisciplinary perspective the criminal market in endangered plants affecting the UK. Quantitative evidence will come from a combination of surface (web forums, social media) and dark web (TOR forums) crawling of cyber-criminal activity; natural language and machine learning used to socio-economically map this activity at a community level.

Intel-Analysis DSTL : a UK DSTL funded project. Intel-Analysis DSTL uses argumentation schemes and evidential reasoning to support teams of analysts trying to evaluate conflicting hypotheses during real-time events. Evidence is obtained in real-time from a combination of human intelligence reports and information extraction from social media via natural language processing.

REVEAL project : an EU funded FP7 project. REVEAL aims to advance the necessary technologies for making a higher level analysis of social media possible. Focussed on social media verification, including digita ltext forensics, trust and credibility analytics and decision support for journalists verifying user generated content.

Director of the Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI)

REF Champion for Computer Science

Dr Enrico Gerding is an Associate Professor in the Agents, Interaction and Complexity (AIC) research group in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. He has been an academic at Southampton since 2007. He received his PhD from the Dutch National Center of Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) in 2004. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, specifically autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in high quality conferences, journals and books in this area. Please see the research tab below for details. Enrico has supervised 19 PhD students to completion. He is the director of Southampton's Centre for Machine Intelligence which brings together AI expertise in ECS. Since 2020 he is a board member of the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS) which organises the annual Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) conference. He is also local organiser of AAMAS 2021. He teaches the MSc module Intelligent Agents (see below for more details on teaching). Currently he is a co-I on several funded projects, including the EPSRC-funded AutoTrust platform grant, the Shell-funded Centre for Maritime Futures.

PhD Studentships. I'm interested in supervising motivated students, and there are plenty of opportunities for fully funded studentships. Note that most studentships only fund UK fees. So if you are an international student without permanent residance (or pre-settled) status, you may have to cover the difference between UK and international fees. For Chinese students, there are various collaborations with the CSC scholarship scheme and it's worth looking into this. Please get in touch to discuss the options and potential topics. See also my research interests below.

Areas of Interest: Multi-Agent Systems, Mechanism Design, Auctions, Algorithmic Game Theory, Agent-Based Negotiation, Fairness, Smart Energy, Electric Vehicles, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Future Transportation Systems, Computational Finance, Privacy, Meaningful Consent, Car Sharing, Ride Sharing, Preference Elicitation, Machine Learning

Research

Research interests

My main research focuses on applications where autonomous self-interested agents compete in markets and negotiate, and where designing appropriate incentives is important to ensure a well functioning and fair society. My research combines theory, mainly game theory and mechanism design, with practical applications. Specific applications include: autonomous vehicles, the smart grid, online advertising markets, cloud computing, algorithmic trading, ride sharing and data privacy.

I'm currently an investigator on the following projects:

This EPSRC-funded platfrom grants looks at a wide range of aspects around the Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), such as the interaction with autonomous systems (human-to-vehicle interaction), the issue of data privacy and consent, as well as the incentives and optimisation of e.g. traffic flow. Specific topics include: how do platoons form and how can they be used most effectively to improve traffic flow; how can we incentivise better use of public transport and/or shared vehicles (ride sharing); how can we best combine different modes of transport to reduce carbon emissions; how can we ensure that transportation data can be stored securely and used for research purposes; in autonomous vehicles and autonomous systems more generally, how can we reason about concepts such as responsibility and accountability especially when there is shared responsibility of a coalition (e.g. in case of a collision).

The project is a collaboration with the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). Investigators on the project in Southampton are: prof m.c. schraefel (PI) and Dr Sebastian Stein. Researchers currently employed on the project include: Dr Vahid Yazdanpanah and Dr Richard Gomer

This ESRC project is led by Dr Gina Frei from the Southampton Business School and is a collaboration between ECS and the business school. The aim is to look at product returns fraud which has been aggravated due to COVID 19. Many retailers are faced with this issue. The project will consider different interventions to reduce fraud and analyse through a combination of interview studies and agent-based modelling.

This collaboration between Shell Shipping, ECS and Engineering aims to reduce carbon emissions in shipping. The ECS team is building an agent-based simulation platform to simulate trades and shipping routes, which can be used to find the most cost effective CO2 reduction measures over a long-term (5-20 years) time horizon.

Teaching

I'm teaching:

  • COMP6203 Intelligent Agents

This module gives a broad introduction to the new and rapidly expanding field of agent-based computing. It introduces the key concepts and models of the field, dealing both with the individual agents and with their interactions. Particular emphasis is placed on automated negotiation, cooperation and on-line auctions, and students are required to program a trading agent in Java which will compete in a class tournament within a simulated trading environment. Main topics include: agent-based negotiation, game theory, auctions, voting, preference elicitation and cooperative games.

  • COMP3208 Social Computing Techniques

This module is about using online collective intelligence or the wisdom of the crowd in various business and research applications and the underlying technologies and algorithms that are used in practice. The main topics covered include: Crowdsourcing, Recommender Systems, Reputation Systems, Experimental Design and Web Analytics, Online Advertising Auctions and Rank Aggregation.

I am a research fellow research with the Accessibility Team in Web and Internet Science Group at the University of Southampton investigating how to improve the design and evaluation of web and learning technologies to remove barriers for disabled learners. I spent 12 years as a product manager in the commercial assistive technology sector. This involved contributing to the whole development process for new learning technologies - from initial design, through development to commercial launch and user training. In parallel I was involved in commercial and academic research projects to evaluate the impact of assistive technology with a particular focus on access to e-text, writing and note-taking. More recently I have been involved in projects to design mobile apps, web services and software tools to improve usability and accessibility of digital materials and learning. As chair of the British Dyslexia Association New Technologies Committee I work with organisations to improve technology-based reasonable adjustments in exams and e-assessments as well as removing the barriers to accessing and adopting assistive technologies in education.

My research interests include:

  • use and impact of techologies by disabled learners;
  • paedoggy and elearning of digital accessibiltiy
  • accessible web development processes and techniques;
  • influences on technology adoption by disabled users, in particular the interface of design, usability and external support;
  • text to speech and note-taking technologies;
  • accessible  e-assessment and use of assistive technology in assessment;
  • inclusive learning practices, particularly the impact of digital accessibility and e-text.

Research

Research interests

My focus is on how human agents interact with technology, especially the online world, to achieve their goals. Most of the work I do is informed by Actor Network Theory and tussle analysis, but also the social psychology of group interactions. This also involves the development of agency and increased self-efficacy.

Trust: The social science construct of trust as an ongoing negotiation between trustor (who is willing to expose themselves to vulnerability) and the trustee (who must demonstrate their trustworthiness through their actions) is an underlying theme to much of the work I am involved in. I do not conflate trust with a cognitive assessment of cost versus benefit since there is definitely both a social and an emotional component. With regard to technology, trust is an "organising principle" for much technology-mediated interaction. It also relates to constructs like self-efficacy and agency in technology adoption.

Cyberpsychology: I bring together many years of experience with computer technologies (especially speech- and language-enabled applications) with a broader psychological perspective. I'm interested primarily in the Internet as a tool to be adapted for user needs, rather than an independent environment, and therefore uncovering the social and network processes which help individuals engage.

Technology Acceptance and Adoption: As part of application and technology evaluation, I am interested in how potential adopters and users create narratives with technology embedded as a predictor of technology acceptance rather than more traditional models (like TAM, UTAUT and DoI)

Ethics: Like trust, all of my work has strong overtones of what is right for the individual, the community and the environment. Ethics is very different from data protection, though the two are often conflated. My focus is on allowing everyone an equal opportunity for self-expression and agency. I am member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) and was also heavily involved with the COVID-19 initiative, including the legal and ethical issues on data sharing.

Qualitative Research Methods: Although I'm perfectly comfortable with quantitative research methods, with a background in speech and language, I am aware and appreciative of the power in language. Not least because of pragmatics, I am especially drawn to qualitative research methods to provide more than a simple quantification of a behaviour or a cohort.
