Joseph is a doctoral student with the University of Southampton and the Alan Turing Institute. He completed an undergraduate degree in computer science at the University of Southampton, and then specialised with a master’s degree focused on machine learning (also at the University of Southampton). Joseph pursed his interest in machine learning and is now researching explainable artificial intelligence – the process of unpacking the “black box” of machine learning and understanding why models exhibit certain behaviours.

Joseph is motivated by the possibility for collaboration within the Turing, with a strong interest in helping others apply and understand machine learning in their domains. He believes a drive towards openness, transparency and explainability in artificial intelligence will allow the recent advances in machine learning to spread and contribute to other areas such as medicine and urban analytics.

Joseph also has experience working in the start-up industry. Using his specialist machine learning knowledge, he contributed to a start-up within the University of Southampton during his master’s degree. He is excited to see how the field of artificial intelligence will progress in the future and is looking forward to working alongside other researchers from a diverse range of fields.

Research

Research interests

Joseph’s doctoral research primarily focuses on explainable artificial intelligence. With the recent rise and successes of deep learning, increasing concern has been raised over the “black box” nature of modern machine learning models and the lack of understanding around how they make predictions. Explainable artificial intelligence represents a drive towards open, transparent and fair models that are easily interpretable. Through analysis of models and data, explainable artificial intelligence can be used to expose bias and shine the light on the inner workings of machine learning.

Beyond the main scope of his research, Joseph is interested in additional machine learning areas such as reinforcement and unsupervised learning. He also maintains an interest from his undergraduate dissertation in genetic algorithms. Beyond machine learning, Joseph is looking to achieve strong collaboration with those interested in applying artificial intelligence to their own research. He is particularly interested in contributing to domain-specific research projects where explainable artificial intelligence is required, as well as developing tools to help researchers explain their machine learning models.

Transient Computing is an interesting field looking at how we can operate small IoT devices with no energy storage. These systems run intermittently, checkpointing system state on power failure. I am particularly interested in developing hardware to better support these systems and increase their forward progress and active time.

Deputy Director, Software Sustainability Institute.

Co-Director, Southampton Research Software Group.

Professor Simon Hettrick is Deputy Director of the Software Sustainability Institute and a Director of the Southampton Research Software Group.

He works with stakeholders from across the research community to develop policies that support research software, the people who develop that software and the researchers who rely on it. Simon's research focuses on the use of software in the research community with the aim of understanding practices and demographics. In this role, he conducted the first study of software reliance in academia.

Simon is a passionate advocate for Research Software Engineers. He orchestrated a campaign to gain recognition for this community, which has grown from a handful of people in 2013 to a substantial international community numbering in the tens of thousands. He was the founding chair of the UK's Association of Research Software Engineers and was a founding Trustee and Treasurer of the Society of Research Software Engineering. He was treasurer of the RSE conference 2016-2019. Simon is Chair of the Hidden REF: a campaign to increase the diversity of research outputs recognised by academia and raise awareness of the hidden roles that make research possible.

Simon is one of the Directors of the Southampton Research Software Group based at the University of Southampton. The group makes research software engineering expertise available to researchers across the University, provides training in software engineering and reproducible research and encourages collaboration and the sharing of knowledge between researchers who rely on software.

He is a member of the Projects Peer Review Panel (large projects) for the Science and Technology Facilities Council, the Data Science Strategic advisory board for the Medical Research Council, the advisory panel for Artificial Intelligence and Informatics at the Rosalind Franklin Institute, the steering committee for the STFC's Computational Science Centre for Research Communities, the advisory board of the Technician TALENT programme, and the Advisory Board for the data-science journal Patterns. Simon was a member of the UKRI e-infrastructure expert group and chair of the working group on software and skills. He has a background in physics and patent law.
